My student placement at the HPB unit of Glenfield Hospital was an incredible experience. The engaging ward rounds provided an up-close understanding of patient care, while witnessing numerous surgeries, including an 8-hour long Whipple procedure, broadened my insights into the world and intricacies of medicine. Participating in simulations not only added a dynamic touch but also enhanced my understanding of teamwork and rapid decision-making in a medical setting.
The consultants and doctors were approachable and shared their knowledge and expertise generously. I am sincerely grateful for this unique opportunity and the valuable insights gained.
A special thanks to Trisha for her unwavering support and for making this unforgettable experience possible!
This opportunity made me realise why medicine is fulfilling. Whether it was in the wards or in surgery, I saw why people spend so much time, money and effort to work long hours and take up a lifetime of learning - it really is a profession of service and sacrifice.
I'm so grateful to be a witness of working in the hospital and to have the privilege to be able to reflect on my future path with clarity and hindsight.
I was reflecting with everyone who has also done work experience at the HPB Department and we were all saying how genuinely life-changing the experience was. Most of us are now applying to medicine because of this opportunity so just wanted to convey my deepest gratitude to you and the team for your patience and support - thank you for giving us a purpose (and glowing material for our personal statement).
The work experience organised by The Aspire Initiative was honestly one of the most insightful and interesting placements I have been apart of. It has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of how hospitals run, the different roles that are essential for a functioning health care system and the different complexities and challenges present within the NHS. It has definitely inspired me to pursue my dreams in medicine.
In terms of consultants, Mr Isherwood was very helpful on the first day and properly showed us and talked us through the ERCP procedures he performed. Professor Dennison was also very encouraging when explaining the different surgeries he was performing when in theatre and allowed us to properly look at the human anatomy and Mr Robertson was very efficient when organising our day for us, giving us freedom in what we wanted to look at and answered any questions we had on the ward rounds.
Thank you so much for this opportunity.
My week of work experience was a truly remarkable journey. The highlight was undoubtedly the 10-hour TPIAT surgery, which included a visit to the lab at LRI, offering an in-depth look at the complexities of advanced medical procedures. Insightful conversations with doctors and surgeons provided a wealth of knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the field of medicine.
Observing patient-doctor interactions and care during ward rounds was invaluable in understanding the ways of patient management and the fulfilment of being a doctor. Additionally, witnessing various other surgeries and ERCPs with Prof. Dennison further enriched my experience. I am so grateful for this experience and I would highly recommend it to others!
